A strong foundation can last a lifetime. At 3 Pillarz Farm, they are rethinking the future of farming to ensure its foundation lasts. The pillars that its namesake refers to are cultivating the next generation of farmers, reconnecting people to their food sources, and enhancing the quality of life in northwestern Pennsylvania. The farm remains family-owned — by the Zajac family — which accounts for the ‘Z’ in the name. The pandemic opened CEO Julie Zajac’s eyes to the food supply chain issues and caused people to question where their food comes from. Zajac says gardening and caring for backyard chicken flocks are a couple of trends that have become popular as people look to be self-sustaining. It also comes at a time when the number of farms in northwestern Pennsylvania is dropping. Less children are taking over their family farms, and those who have an interest in farming may not have the capital required to start one or may not have the experience to know if they will like it or be successful. That’s why 3 Pillarz is an incubator — it’s a place where people can get a better understanding of what a farm is and even try their hand at it. The farm facilitates education, whether that’s by giving farm tours to school classes, raising awareness about the benefits of homegrown eating, and connecting those interested in farming with resources to help them cultivate sustainable practices.
